Spooky Islanders & More

Over the weekend Useppa was filled with people who care about pumpkins and treats and people who care about the quality of the water that surrounds us.  Actually… the two groups overlapped.  It was fun to play and dress up, hold our hands out for candy or a glass of wine. That’s Useppa.  But Useppa is also a place where the condition of the waters surrounding our island, the Everglades, the Florida coastlines on both the East and west Coast is one of our major concerns.  Having the Captains for Clean Water, members of the Everglades Trust, local politicians, and Useppa Members meet together on our island to discuss plans and strategies for solving Florida’s water crisis was something we can all be proud of…..

Reasons to Visit Useppa in the Fall

Impromptu Bloody Marys on the beach, the Cookie Brigade in action, croquet on the lawn, lunch at the Collier, boats in the Marina, a visit from the Sarasota Field Club, Drive In Movies Useppa style, and the celebration of a wedding…. all part of autumn on an island.

Island Fall

It’s still warm. There are still afternoon showers. But, there are also rainbows, chances to spend quiet time with friends, family gatherings, play a game of tennis, a game of bocce.  It’s the time of year before another season begins…

September Quiet

Between the end of summer and the beginning of fall, it’s peaceful on Useppa. There’s plenty of time for good friends to catch up and have a leisurely lunch, stroll around the island.  Children can eat ice cream more than once a day. Brothers can tease each other. It’s perfect weather to climb the Pink Path Banyan Tree or go out fishing early in the morning just to see if anything’s biting.  The pool is almost empty. Dinners at the Collier Inn all seem like private affairs. Afternoon rainbows and showers, picture book sunsets, slow morning breezes…

Midsummer on an Island

Mangoes hanging from the trees, sunset paintings across the sky, families lunching on the Collier patio, boats overnight in the Marina, late afternoon croquet, a long empty beach, baby Henry “Hank” Stack’s first visit to Useppa…..

The slow rhythms of mid-summer on an island.
