Christmas 2017 Tennis Round-Robin

2017 Useppa Christmas Tennis Round Robin – Commentary by Fran Coryell, Photos by UseppaGin – While Wimbledon May have its strawberries and cream, Useppa Island’s annual Tennis Christmas Round Robin has its own traditions that no grand slam can rival. Those traditions mean fun and competition between friends old and new. Led by Useppa Island’s tennis pro Fran Coryell, the island’s tennis fanatics enjoyed showing their tennis skills while celebrating the holidays. Thanks to everyone for their participation. Congratulations to Champion Ryan Merrill. See you on the courts in 2018.

2017 Kid’s Christmas Fishing Tournament

2017 Christmas Kids Izaak Walton Fishing Tournament – Commentary and Photographs by UseppaGin – Captain Ken, Official Timekeeper Paul Miller IV and Coach Kyle Corey made it happen.
The fish were biting and the kids were catching – it was another successful Izaak Walton Kids Fishing Tournament.
The tradition of catch and release fishing is a part of every youngster’s growing up on Useppa. Over the years, novices with someone else baiting their hooks and casting their lines turn into self-sufficient anglers. Eventually, like Kyle, they end up on the dock sharing their skills.
Useppa is a family, and nowhere is it more obvious than watching generations sharing the experience and excitement of that first fish.
Congratulations to all the boys and girls fishing in the 2017 Izaak Kids Walton Tournament.
Blue Ribbon winners caught at least one fish. Trophies went to Joe, Maisie, Maxwell, Collin and Vanessa.

Useppa Duathlon 2017

2017 Annual Useppa Duathlon: Organized by Simon Bound – Photographs by UseppaGin – The third annual Useppa Duathlon took place on December 28th. Helen won a hotly contested kids’ 500m, Maxwell was second, and Greg was third. The main event was the usual 2k run, 500m swim and 2k run. A strong northerly wind caused the swim to be shorted somewhat by the race committee. A few notable absences this year made predictions difficult. Two time champion Alex Bound was away swim training in CT with brother Jack, and the always competitive Siprelle sons were absent. However, a tight race ensured.
Team Michigan, Josie and Will Ervin won the relay event for the second year in a row, followed in second place by husband and wife team Joel and Susan Bentley, and third “Team Mum” of Maggie Bound, Laura Stokes, and Heather Beckstead. What an inspiration they were! The ladies’ trophy was won by first time competitor Leslie Carroll – running with no shoes! (Remember Zola Budd, Atlanta, anyone?!). The male event was won by Colin Fahey, second place Jake Merrill, 24.30, and a bronze medal for Joe Street, 29.33. A new state of the art timing clock was provided by our stalwart race Marshall Paul Miller IV. Thanks to him and race photographer Ginny Amsler!
The event continues to gather in popularity. Mark your dance cards for late December 2018

Christmas 2017

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas on Useppa-
Comments and Photos by UseppaGin-
On the 24th of December, Santa took a break before the long night ahead. The reindeer grazed on Pine Island while Santa caught a boat and headed to Useppa.
Kids met at the Fire House and climbed on the fire trucks. Then the trucks slowly wound their way to the beach. An impromptu procession of golf cars followed, filled with parents and grandparents.
When Santa arrived, he walked down the dock with Fire Chief Frank and Assistant Fire Chief Laura. He climbed on the big fire truck and trucks and golf carts paraded up and down the beach.
Ice Cream and cake for all, present from Santa for the kid. Just one other great time on Useppa.

Thanksgiving 2017

Island Thanksgiving
Thoughts and Photos by UseppaGin
So much to be thankful for this year. Useppa was spared major damage by Hurricane Irma, and we know better than to take island life for granted.
On Thanksgiving, many of us gathered at the Collier Inn to enjoy a fest prepared and served by Useppa’s hardworking staff. In so many ways, each of us remembered Islanders who made Useppa a better place. We celebrated the gift of our ongoing Useppa friendships. We looked around our tables treasuring loved ones.
We are family here. Members, residents, and employees are all part of a community. We rejoice in each other’s good times and keep each other company through the hard ones.
Happy Thanksgiving to all who love this island.

Faces tell the story.  Couples dancing looking at each other with love and happiness.  People around a table enjoy each other’s company.  Inside the Collier Inn, guests are served shrimp, stone crabs, salmon, prime rib.   At the bar inside, Roxie and Rachel pour drinks, outside on the patio glasses of wine.  Conversations, stories, laughter and hugs…A toast and thank you to the Useppa Island Club

The votes are in.  It was the best Members Party ever.  The combination of food, fellowship, music and people made it a great evening.  It was easy to have fun.  There was a natural flow between the Izaak Walton Bar and the Collier Patio.  Homeowners, back from up north, mixed in with boaters back from their summer adventures.  Year-round members and residents enjoyed the new energy after a lazy Florida summer.

A thank  you to Useppa Island Club is well deserved.
